Utica, NY (8/31/12) - Jonathan Peterson and
Alex Sheridan (East Islip, NY/St. John the Baptist) each netted one goal and added two assists while
Kevin McAllister (Boxford, MA/Masconomet Regional) recorded two goals of his own to lift the Utica College men's soccer team to a 4-1 season-opening victory over visiting Berkeley College Friday night at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.
The Pioneers, who have now won two straight season openers, improved to 1-0 on the year headed into a matchup with cross-town rival SUNYIT on the road Saturday night. Head Coach Eric Watson won his 99th collegiate game and he will look to eclipse the century mark against the Wildcats tomorrow night. The contest is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at Wildcat Stadium in Marcy, NY.
McAllister got the Pioneers off to a great start when he headed home the first goal of the game after a perfect crossing pass from Peterson, to put the Pioneers on top just 1:14 into the contest. Sheridan was also credited with an assist on the game's first goal.
7:20 later the Pioneers took a 2-0 advantage when Sheridan scored his first goal of the young season after another centering pass from Peterson.
Berkeley would not go down without a fight as they found the back of the net to cut the Pioneers' lead in half in the 28th minute. Adem Isa was credited with the goal after he beat UC goalie
Anthony Caruso (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow) on the right side.
UC netted two second half insurance goals to seal the victory. Sheridan recorded his second assist of the evening when he played the ball through the middle and it was redirected home by Peterson. McAllister ended the game as he began it when he headed his second tally of the night off a
Jeffrey Cupka (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional) corner kick to put the Pioneers' up by three goals.
Caruso finished the night with three saves in net for Utica and the Pioneers outshot the visitors 10-4 in the contest.
