Late Surge Guides Naz Past UC in E8 Opener

Rochester, NY (Sept. 15, 2012) – The Utica College men's soccer team held the third ranked team in the East Region scoreless for over 66 minutes, but host Nazareth caught fire late in the contest to earn a 3-1 victory over the Pioneers in the Empire 8 Conference opener for both squads Saturday afternoon.  Nazareth, who is receiving votes in the NSCAA Division III National Polls, netted all three of its goals in a span of less than 18 minutes late in the second half to secure its fourth victory of the season. 

Nazareth opened the scoring in the 67th minute as junior Ryan Foley netted his second goal of the season off an assist from classmate James Wheeler.

The Golden Flyers scored again at the 82 minute mark as Wheeler scored his fourth goal of the season.
Just three minutes later, Naz again found the back of the net as junior Luke Elston scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season.  Freshman Anthony Calarco assisted on the score.

UC got on the board in the 85th minute as senior Daniel Garcia (Fairport, NY/Fairport) scored his third tally of the season.

Utica's Anthony Caruso (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow) made seven saves, while his counterpart, J.P. Horan had five stops.

The Pioneers fall to 4-2 overall and 0-1 in the Empire 8; while Nazareth improves to 5-0 and 1-0 in the conference.  Utica returns to action Wednesday as it travels to Geneva, NY to take on Hobart College at 4:30 p.m.  The Golden Flyers welcome RIT on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
