UC Field Hockey Runs Record to 2-0 After Win over SLU

Box Score Utica 1, St. Lawrence 0 - Final

Utica, NY (9/2/12)- The Utica College women's field hockey team continued its success Sunday as it defeated visiting St. Lawrence University (0-2) on the second day of the Utica College field hockey tournament.  Sophomore Hannah Mackey (Locke, NY/Moravia Central) netted her team-best third of the season, while classmate Olivia Cunningham (Bethlehem, NH/Profile) picked up her second collegiate win.

After a scoreless first half, Mackey broke the deadlock just under three minutes into the second frame as she gathered a loose ball about 12 yards out, turned and fired a ball into the left side of the net, past Saint goalie Brady Cooper.

St. Lawrence had its best opportunity of the game with just over nine minutes remaining as senior Courtney Cartier got behind the Utica defense at the 20-yard line and ran in on goal.  Cunningham stopped the initial shot as well as the rebound try by Ashley Ferenczy.

The Pioneers out shot St. Lawrence 19-3 on the day.  Cunningham stopped all three shots she faced on the way to her first career shutout, while her counterpart, Brady Cooper had 16 saves in the loss.

UC returns to action Saturday as it hosts Morrisville State for a non-conference contest.  Game time is scheduled for 11 a.m.
