Box Score 2 Alfred, NY (9/22/12) – The Utica College volleyball team went 1-1 on the second day of the Empire 8 Cross-Over Tournament hosted by Alfred University, Saturday.
Game one:
Elmira College handed Utica a 3-0 defeat in straight sets (25-9, 25-14, 24-17) Saturday morning at Speidel Gymnasium in the Pioneers second match of the Empire 8 Conference Cross-Over Tournament. Junior Taryn Rumsey came up huge for the Soaring Eagles with 16 kills, nine digs and two assists. Senior Sasha Zavadska followed closely with 15 kills and four assists of her own.
Pioneer sophomore
Cassandra Manzer (Portcrane, NY/Chenango Valley) led UC with five kills, while classmate
Kellee Furno (Baltimore, MD/Maryvalle) paced the Pioneers with 12 assists. Junior
Tarah Babcock (Candor,NY/Candor) recorded 11 digs, but it was not enough to keep Elmira from victory.
Elmira improves its record to 7-4, while UC drops to 4-8.
Game two:
Utica picked up its fifth win of the season and first in the conference as it downed host Alfred University 3-0 in the second match of the day. This was the first conference win for Utica since 2009 when it defeated Alfred 3-0.
Cassandra Manzer (Portcrane, NY/Chenango Valley) had a game-high 11 kills to go along with nine digs, while classmate
Madison Bayer (Islip Terrace, NY/East Islip) had nine kills, one ace, and one dig.
Chelsea Lauria (Erieville, NY/Cazenovia) and
Kellee Furno (Baltimore, MD/Maryvalle) combined for 34 assists.
The Pioneers (5-8 overall, 1-2 Empire 8) return to action Wednesday as they travel to Rochester, NY for an Empire 8 Contest against St. John Fisher at 7 p.m.
