Late Goals Propel Houghton Past Utica

Box Score Houghton, NY (9/29/12)- The Utica College women's soccer team dropped its third straight game, Saturday, 3-0, at the hands of new Empire 8 member, Houghton College.Senior Samantha Spohler (East Durham, NY/Cairo Durham) and junior Quinn Freeman-Roche (Putnam Valley, NY/Ursuline) combined for three shots on net, while junior Caitlyn Smith (Waterville, NY/Madison) made a season-high 14 saves for UC.

The Pioneers were able to hold the Highlanders scoreless until the 73rd minute, when junior Emilie Edwards netted her first collegiate goal.  Edwards gathered a ball at the right side of the box and drilled a ball in the left side of the net to put Houghton up 1-0.

The Highlanders added two more goals to seal the victory.  Houghton improves to 6-5 on the season, while Utica drops to 6-4. 

The Pioneers return to action next Saturday, Oct. 6, as they host St. John Fisher for an Empire 8 Conference match.  Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
