Houghton Too Much for Women's Hoops

Houghton, NY (1/11/13)- The Utica College women's basketball team dropped its second straight game Friday night as it fell to host Houghton College, 76-64.  Senior Meghan Fiore (Epping, NH/Epping) had a team-high 17 points and 11 rebounds, while freshman Mary Miceli (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) knocked down four 3-pointers and totaled 14 points for the Pioneers.

The home team jumped out to a commanding 18-2 lead in the first 5:25 of the contest before Utica was able to rally to go into the locker room trailing 37-28.

The Pioneers we able to cut the lead to seven with 6:38 to play, but Houghton stepped it up and held on for its seventh win of the season. 

Apart from Fiore and Miceli, sophomore Marissa Kahane (Sayville, NY/Sayville) chipped in with ten points in 12 minutes of work off the bench for UC.  Racquel Baudanza (Staten Island, NY/New Dorp) added seven points, while Alyssa Filkins (Castleton, NY/Maple Hill) and Kelcei Edmonds (Pittsburgh, PA/Shady Side Academy) each scored six points.  Sophomore Samantha Stayer (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone) also had four points.

This was the third double-double in four games for Fiore, who now has seven on the year.  Miceli also had a season-high seven assists in the losing effort. 

The Highlanders had two players record double-doubles including leading scorer Kristen Moose (25 points, 12 rebounds) and Kaitlin Hammersley (13 points, 10 rebounds).

Houghton improves to 7-5 while UC drops to 7-8.  The Pioneers have a quick turnaround as they face Nazareth Saturday at 4 p.m.
