Utica, NY (1/16/13)- The Utica College women's basketball team returns home Saturday as it takes on Elmira College in Empire 8 action.  Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Last Time Out: Utica is coming off a 1-1 weekend on the road… On Friday, senior Meghan Fiore (Epping, NH/Epping) led the team with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while freshman Mary Miceli (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) racked up 14 points of her own in a 76-64 loss to Houghton College… The Pioneers rebounded on Saturday behind 27 points from Fiore, and an 11-point effort from sophomore Samantha Stayer (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone) to defeat Nazareth 63-60. 

Where We Sit: Utica is 8-8 overall and 4-2 in the Empire 8… The Pioneers are currently fourth in the league standings behind Ithaca, Hartwick, and Stevens… UC is averaging 60.1 points per game and ranks second in the conference with 44.6 rebounds per contest.

Fiore Continues Strong Play: Senior Meghan Fiore (Epping, NH/Epping) leads the team and ranks third in the conference with 15.9 points per game… She is also second in the E8 in rebounds per game (8.8) and field goal percentage (52.8)… She has recorded three double-doubles in the last five games and seven total on the year. 

The Rest: Freshman Mary Miceli (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) is second on the team with 168 total points… She leads the squad with 26 threes and is averaging 4.9 boards and 2.2 assists per game… Junior Bridget Greenwald (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) leads the conference in rebounds (159) and rebounds per game (9.9)… She has also netted 122 points through 16 games this season… Classmate Alyssa Filkins (Castleton, NY/Maple Hill) is first in the conference averaging nearly five assists per game (4.9)… She is also second on the team, sinking 13 from behind the arc, and has netted 86 points on the year.

Scouting Elmira: The Soaring Eagles are 5-10 overall (1-4 Empire 8) and are coming off a 55-29 loss to Ithaca on Tuesday night… Their lone conference win came by way of a 62-53 victory at Alfred on Jan. 8… Elmira is led by juniors Jessica Zoltowski and Maria Thannhauser… Zoltowski is averaging 16.1 points and 7.5 rebounds per game while Thannhauser has netted 14.1 points and grabbed 4.9 boards per game. 

Against the Soaring Eagles: UC is 10-5 against Elmira dating back to the 2005-2006 season… Utica has won the last ten meetings between the teams… The last time the Soaring Eagles beat the Pioneers was an 87-62 victory on Feb. 3, 2007… Last year UC topped Elmira 82-76 on Jan. 21, behind a 24-point, 14 rebound night from Fiore… Then, on Feb. 11, the Pioneers defeated EC  73-69, after Fiore netted a career-high 35 points.

Looking Ahead: Utica returns to action Tuesday, Jan. 22 as it hosts Nazareth College for a 6 p.m. tip off.

Save the Date: On Tuesday, Feb. 5, Time Warner Cable will be televising the Pioneers' “Play 4 Kay” game against Hartwick College… Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
