Utica, NY (1/19/13)- The Utica College women's basketball team sunk ten 3-pointers to bury visiting Elmira College, 67-51, Saturday afternoon in Empire 8 Conference play.  Senior Meghan Fiore (Epping, NH/Epping) registered her eighth double-double with a team-high 17 points and 13 rebounds.

The game started out slowly on the offensive end, as Utica led just 12-9 at the halfway point of the first frame.  However, the Pioneers went on a 9-2 run behind seven points from freshman Racquel Baudanza (Staten Island, NY/New Dorp) to take control.  UC then got baskets from Fiore, Baudanza, and freshman Mary Miceli (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) to take a 33-19 lead into the locker room.

Elmira opened the second half putting strong pressure on the home team.  The Soaring Eagles cut the lead to eight just five minutes into the second stanza, but the Pioneers kicked it up a notch to take a 65-40 lead with under two minutes left to play.

Elmira was able to outscore UC in the final two minutes, but it was not enough as the Pioneers held on for the win.  Utica improves to 9-8 overall and 5-2 in the Empire 8, while Elmira drops to 5-11 overall and 1-5 in the conference.

Racquel Baudanza (Staten Island, NY/New Dorp) finished with 15 points on the day after hitting a game-high four 3-pointers.  Miceli had 12 points and eight boards, while senior Brittany Baudanza (Staten Island, NY/Staten Island Tech) had eight points and led all players with five assists.  Alyssa Filkins (Castleton, NY/Maple Hill), Marissa Kahane (Sayville, NY/Sayville), Kelcei Edmonds (Pittsburgh, PA/Shady Side Academy), and Bridget Greenwald (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) also added points for UC.

The Pioneers continue home play Tuesday as they host Nazareth College.  Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.  Elmira returns home, Tuesday,  to face Houghton College.  Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
