Women's Basketball Travels to Stevens Friday Night

Freshman Mary Miceli and the Pioneers face a big game against Stevens on Friday
Utica, NY (1/30/13)- The Utica College women's basketball team wraps up a three-game road trip Friday as it travels to Hoboken, NJ for an Empire 8 match up against Stevens Institute of Technology.  Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Last Time Out: Utica is coming off a 1-1 outing last weekend… On Friday, UC fell to host St. John Fisher College, 60-44… Senior Meghan Fiore (Epping, NH/Epping) had 14 points and 12 boards, while freshman Mary Miceli (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) netted 12 points… On Saturday, the Pioneers rebounded to knock off Alfred University 86-43… Five different players scored in double digits including sophomore Samantha Stayer (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone) who had a career-high 20 points… Fiore netted 15, while freshman Kelcei Edmonds (Pittsburgh, PA/Shady Side Academy) had 13 points and junior Bridget Greenwald (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) chipped in with 11 points and 13 rebounds… Sophomore Marissa Kahane (Sayville, NY/Sayville) also added ten points of her own and junior Alyssa Filkins (Castleton, NY/Maple Hill) had a game-high eight dishes in the win.

In the E8: The Pioneers are currently 10-10 overall (6-4 Empire 8) and tied with St. John Fisher for third in the conference… Ithaca and Hartwick sit in the top spot in the Empire 8…  Ithaca has an impressive 16-2 record and an 8-1 mark in the E8…. Hartwick also holds an 8-1 conference record and is 16-4 overall.  

Leading the Way: Senior Meghan Fiore (Epping, NH/Epping) leads the team and ranks second in the conference with 15.8 points per game… She has totaled nine double-doubles this season and is averaging 8.8 boards per game, which ranks third in the E8…  Freshman Mary Miceli (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) is second on the team with 10.5 points per game… She leads the team with 32 three-pointers on the season and ranks fourth in the conference shooting 34% from behind the arc.

Helping Out: Junior Bridget Greenwald (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) is first in the Empire 8 with 9.2 rebounds per game… She also ranks third on the squad with 151 points on the year (7.6 P/GM)… Meanwhile, classmate Alyssa Filkins (Castleton, NY/Maple Hill) leads theconference with 4.6 rebounds per game.

Scouting Stevens: The Ducks are 9-10 overall and 4-5 in the Empire 8… They are fresh off a 52-46 overtime loss to Hartwick on Tuesday night… Stevens is led by junior Avis Benjamin and freshman Dylan Krause… Benjamin has netted 13.1 points and 6.9 rebounds per game while Krause is averaging 11.6 points and 7.3 boards per contest.

Against the Ducks: UC is 4-10 against Stevens over the last five years…  The Pioneers won the first meeting this year between the two teams 59-53… Both Fiore and Greenwald recorded double-doubles on the day… Fiore had 17 points and 15 rebounds, while Greenwald had ten points and grabbed 12 balls off the glass.

Looking Ahead: The Pioneers return to action Tuesday as they host Hartwick College for their Dunkin Donuts and Play 4 Kay Game televised on Time Warner Cable… Tip off will be at 6 p.m.
