Utica Volleyball Set for Ithaca Invitational

(10/10/13)- The Utica College volleyball team hits the road for the Ithaca College Invitational this weekend. On Friday, the Pioneers take on Ithaca College at 3:30 p.m. and Messiah College at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, UC will take on Medaille College at 12:15 p.m. before wrapping up the weekend against Wells College at 2:30 p.m.

TIME TO BOUNCE BACK: The Pioneers have lost three straight matches… The last time UC lost three straight, they responded by winning two of their next three matches.

LAST TIME OUT: UC lost to cross town rival, SUNYIT, 3-0 Wednesday night... Junior Cassandra Manzer (Portcrane, NY/Chenango Valley) led the way with ten kills… The Pioneers lost in straight sets, 25-19, 25-13, 25-18… Sophomore Lora Allen (Dolgeville, NY/Dolgeville) had a team-best 16 assists… Alexis Lyon (Prospect, NY/Holland Patent) and Diamond DeVane (Ridge, NY/Longwood) led the squad with seven digs each.

PIONEERS ATOP THE CONFERENCE: Cassandra Manzer (Portcrane, NY/Chenango Valley) and Brandi Blaszak (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) both rank in the top five in the Empire 8 in hitting percentage… Blaszak ranks first in the conference in blocks with 76… Lori Allen is currently second in the Empire 8 with 0.56 service aces per set… Briona Enny (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) is seventh in the conference with 3.76 digs per set… As a team, UC leads the Empire 8 with a hitting percentage of 0.22.

BOMBS AWAY: Ithaca College enters the weekend at 8-16 overall and 1-2 in the Empire 8… The Bombers are currently struggling, having dropped their last four matches… Shaelynn Schmidt leads the Bombers with 225 kills… Rylie Bean ranks second with 175 kills… Siobhan Sorensen ranks first on the team with 0.67 blocks per set… Grace Chang, Myan Idziur, and Dylan Gawinski Stern have each recorded over 150 digs.

FALCONS FLYING HIGH: Messiah College heads to Ithaca with a 10-9 overall record… The Falcons are coming off a 3-0 Commonwealth Conference victory over Arcadia University… Kristen Douglas leads Messiah with 190 kills… Jane Underman has had a strong season with 178 kills… Douglas does damage on defense as well with 243 digs… The only Falcon with more digs is Allison Hill (255)… Alyssa Vorbeck leads Messia with 43 blocks.

MAVERICKS CHARGING: The Medaille Mavericks come to Ithaca riding a two game winning streak… The Mavericks are 5-12 overall… Jenna Cleversley leads the team with 165 kills… Marlena Clotfelter is second on the team with 102… Simmone Talford sets up nearly every Maverick point, as she has 440 assists on the year… Cleversley also has 201 digs on the year which leads the team… Talford's 24 blocks rank first on the team.

EXAMINING THE EXPRESS: Wells College enters the weekend at 4-14 overall… Last time out they fell 3-1 to SUNY Cobleskill… Meredith Kadjeski leads the Express with 226 kills… Zakarra Butts is second with 93 kills on the year… Nadine Pershyn leads Wells with 165 digs… Nicole Loeven and Jessilyn Artaho-Aki have each recorded over 100 digs as well… Kadjeski also leads the team in hitting percentage (.201) and service aces per set (0.62).

LOOKING AHEAD: On October 18, the Pioneers head to Oneonta, NY for the Hartwick College Holiday Inn Invitational… UC will take on Oneonta State in the first match at 6 p.m.
