Herring ranks first all-time in career rebounds (451) and second in points (1,587)
Utica, NY (10/18/13) - Former Utica College men's basketball star Doug Herring recently signed a professional contract with the St. John Mill Rats of the National Basketball League of Canada.
Herring, a 6'3 guard from Poughkeepsie, NY played for the Pioneers from 2005-2009 and averaged 18.2 points, 5.1 rebounds, 4.7 assists, and 2.0 steals per game throughout his career. He was named Empire 8 Rookie of the Year for the 2005-06 season and was voted First Team All-Conference in each of his final three seasons. He finished his career ranking first on the College's all-time assists list with 451 and is second all-time in career scoring with 1,587 points.
Herring has spent the last two seasons with the Hudson Valley Kings of the Atlantic Professional Basketball League, where he averaged 31 points per game and even had a season-high 66-point outing. This summer, he had a 53-point performance in a game at the Greater Hartford Pro Am, one of the best pro-am circuits in the country. His play attracted the attention of Mill Rats General Manager Ian McCarthy and co-owner Steven Yankopoulos, who jumped at the opportunity to sign the free agent.
"Doug is an undiscovered talent who has the rare combination of being a devastating scorer but he also makes the right basketball plays, " said McCarthy. "He is not a selfish player by any means."
