Hoboken, NJ (10/5/13)- The Utica College field hockey team dropped its first conference game of the season, Saturday as it fell to Empire 8 rival, Stevens Institute of Technology 4-3 in overtime. Junior
Angela Charles (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) led the Pioneers with two goals on the day.
Utica jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 3:02 into the contest as Charles netted her second goal of the season, unassisted. After Utica was awarded a penalty corner, Charles' first shot was blocked by a Stevens defender, but she was able to put the rebound in to lift Utica.
The Ducks responded eight minutes later as senior Megan Traub netted her seventh goal of the season, off a corner, assisted by classmate Marguerite Chavez. Stevens added another tally at 28:44 as Dailyn Brook put in a rebound off of Chavez's shot for her fifth of the season.
Charles netted her second of the game at 42:59 as she deflected a
Hannah Mackey (Locke, NY/Moravia Central) shot past Emily Stukenborg, to knot the score at two. Just two minutes later, Stevens once again scored the go ahead goal, this time off a penalty stroke goal by Marguerite Chavez. However, Mackey was able to score the equalizer with under seven minutes remaining in regulation with her tenth of the season to force overtime.
Chasity Eckert (Afton, NY/Afton Central) assisted on the tally.
Marguerite Chavez put in the game-winner 7:36 into overtime with her conference-leading 11th goal of the season, off a corner. The Ducks outshot Utica 4-1 and held a 2-1 penalty corner advantage in the extra frame.

Hannah Mackey (Locke, NY/Moravia Central) tied Katie Kutas '08 for third on the College's career scoring list with 98 points.
Kells Casey (Sandwich, MA/Kimball Union Academy) made a game-high 12 saves for Utica, while her counterpart, Emily Stuckenborg had three saves on the day.
Stevens improves to 7-3 overall (4-0 Empire 8), while the Pioneers drop to 8-3 (3-1 E8). Utica returns to action Wednesday as it travels to Troy, NY for a non-conference meeting against RPI. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
