Utica, NY (10/8/13)- The Utica College volleyball team lost a heartbreaker to SUNY Cobleskill, 3-1, in its "Dig Pink" game Tuesday night at the Clark Athletic Center.
Cassandra Manzer (Portcrane, NY/Chenango Valley) and
Laura Homer-Gunther (Sauquoit, NY/Sauquoit) each had 11 kills on the night.
In honor of breast cancer awareness, the Pioneers wore special edition pink jerseys, sold pink t-shirts and baked goods, and raffled off various items with all proceeds donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
UC took the first set 25-17 and was just one points away from taking a commanding two-set lead, however Cobleskill was able to fight back and win the second frame by a score of 29-27, swinging the momentum in favor of the Fighting Tigers. Utica tried to regain control, but was unable to as the Tigers went on to take the match.
Freshman
Brandi Blaszak (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) had ten kills and three blocks, while
Lora Allen (Dolgeville, NY/Dolgeville) and
Carly Lonczak (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) combined for 17 assists. Junior
Briona Enny (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) had a team-high 12 digs. Lonczak, Allen, Blaszak,
Diamond DeVane (Ridge, NY/Longwood),
Chelsea Lauria (Erieville, NY/Cazenovia), Leah kazalski, and
Cassandra Manzer (Portcrane, NY/Chenango Valley) also recorded digs on the evening. Junior
Alyssa Nicotera (New York Mills, NY/New York Mills) also helped out with two kills and one block.
The Pioneers drop to 6-13 on the year. They will travel across town Wednesday night to face local rival, SUNYIT. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
