Pioneers Fall to Potsdam in Season-Opener - Miceli Nets 42 to Lead UC

Sophomore Mary Micelli netted a career-high 42 points
Box Score Utica, NY (11-16-13) – Sophomore Mary Miceli (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) netted a career-high 42 points Saturday as the Utica College women's basketball team dropped its season-opener by one point, 78-77, to SUNY Potsdam. Miceli hit 15-of-28 from the floor, including 5-of-10 from behind the arc to go along with five boards, two steals and two assists.

The Pioneers jumped out to an early seven point lead, 9-2, at 16:26 as Micelli drained her first of seven 3-pointers for UC. Over the next two minutes, however, the visitors would put together a 14-2 run taking a 16-13 lead with 12:18 left in the first. Potsdam pushed to an 11 point cushion at the halfway mark and would hold a double-digit lead until .25 left in the half. The Bears led by as many as 14 before UC began to chip away and cut the deficit to nine, 47-39, at the break. Both squads shot 50% from the floor in the first half but Potsdam's 54.55% from downtown and 100% from the free throw line would be the difference compared to Utica's dismal 41% from 3-point land and 50% from the line.

In the second half, the Bears picked up right where they left off maintaining a comfortable lead and pushing to their biggest of the game. The visitors took a 16 point lead at 13:57 and maintained a minimum nine point edge over the next three minutes before the Pioneers would make their move. UC streaked a 10-0 run over the next few minutes led by eight straight Micelli points to cut the debt to one point, 67-66. Utica eventually tied the game at 71 apiece with a 3:31 to play but would run out of clock as it lost its opener by a mere one point.

UC sophomore Kelcei Edmonds (Pittsburgh, PA/Shady Side Academy) posted 12 points, five boards and four assists while senior Bridget Greenwald (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with eight points.

The Pioneers return to the court Tuesday as they hit the road for back-to-back games against Oneonta and RPI. Tuesday tip is set for 6 p.m.
