GENEVA, NY (11/22/2013) – The nationally-ranked No. 7/7 Utica College men's hockey team tied host and nationally-ranked No. 14/13 Hobart College 3-3 in a key ECAC Men's West Conference contest at the Geneva Recreational Complex on Friday night. After trailing 3-2 for the entire third period, the Statesmen sent the contest into overtime when Keith Clarke scored his first of the year with 54 seconds left in regulation to tie the score up at 3-3. The Pioneers earned a power-play opportunity with 1:10 left in the overtime period -- but they could not find the back of the net -- and the series between the two conference foes stands at 1-0-1 in favor of Hobart headed into Saturday's final regular season contest between the two tomorrow night in Geneva (5 p.m.).
UC moved its record to 5-1-1 overall (4-1-1 ECAC West), with their lone loss of the season coming at the hands of Hobart two weekends ago. Hobart's overall record is now 2-1-4 (2-0-3 ECAC West). The Pioneers are now 2-0-1 and have one game left in their four game conference road trip.
Two short-handed goals for the Pioneers proved to keep the contest close early on. UC trailed 1-0 before junior
Peter LaFosse (Merrimack, NH/Kimball Union Academy) netted an unassisted short-handed goal, his first of the season, to knot the score at 1-1 with 8:19 left in the first period.
Hobart answered and UC fell behind 2-1, but the Pioneers responded again, with another short-handed goal from the stick of senior
Rob Morton (New Hartford, NY/Merrimack (Hockey East)), to knot the score at 2-2 with 8:48 left in the second period. Morton's first goal of the season was assisted by team leading scorer
Trever Hertz (Jaffray, British Columbia/Quesnel Millionaires (BCHL)).
Utica freshman
Kevin Kirisits (Buffalo, NY/Brockville (CCHL)) gave the Pioneers their first lead of the afternoon as he netted his first intercollegiate goal with 4:08 to go in the second period off assists from
Mike Baird (Oakville, Ontario/Huntsville (OJHL)) and
Justin Hogan (Val Therese, Ontario/Brooks Bandits (AJHL)).
UC was able to fend off the home team for the entire third period until Clarke lit the lamp with under a minute to go to send the game to overtime.
Hobart out shot UC 41-28 on the afternoon, while Utica senior goalie
Nick Therrien (Rochester, NH/NY Apple Core (EJHL)) stopped 38 shots in 65:00 of action between the pipes. The Pioneers went 1-for-8 on the power-play in the contest.
