UTICA, NY (November 23, 2013) - Utica College's
Mary Miceli (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) knocked down two free throws with 51 seconds left in the game to give the Pioneers a one point lead and that score held for the remainder of the contest as the Pioneers topped a pesky Sage College team, 60-59, on the hardwood at the Clark Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon. Miceli led all scorers with 18 points, while senior forward Briget Greenwald added a game-high 16 rebounds and chipped in with eight points.
Marissa Kahane (Sayville, NY/Sayville) came off the bench and provided UC with two clutch 3-pointers in the second half to help lift the Pioneers to their second consecutive victory. Kahane finished the day with 11 points.
UC (2-2) returns to action after Thanksgiving when it travels to Hamilton College to take on the Continentals in nearby Clinton, NY on December 1 at 2 p.m.
The contest was a part of Faculty Appreciation day at the Clark Athletic Center where the Pioneers hosted a ceremony at halftime to honor their most influential faculty members.
Guard Megan Bowman scored 16 points and added five assists to guide the Gators, while Carlee Hirt posted a double-double by scoring 12 points and hauling 13 rebounds.
UC's largest lead of the game came in the first half when they earned a ten point advantage, 33-23, with 15 seconds to go in the first half of play. That lead was largely in part due to a 16-8 run in the final 7:50 of the first half where six different Pioneers scored at least two points. UC also caused three turnovers in the stretch and held the Gators to 3-of-11 shooting from the floor.
The Pioneers led for the vast majority of the contest (34:40/86,7%), but a Gator run late in the second half found the visitors on top 59-57 with 2:22 remaining in the contest. The Gators trailed 55-50 with 6:06 remaining before going on an 11-2 run in a span of 3:58 to earn the two point advantage, 59-57. Carlee Hirt scored six points in the run, while holding UC to just 1-of-5 shooting from the floor and the Gators also caused three turnovers in the stretch.
Utica was able to score three points, all coming from the charity stripe in the final 1:59 of the game, while holding Sage to 0-for-3 shooting in the closing two minutes.
23 of the Pioneers 60 total points came from their bench play.
Christy Traglia (Mohawk, NY/Mohawk) finished the night with six points and three rebounds, while
Kelsey Cowell (Schenectady, NY/Mohonasen) came off the bench and netted nine points.
Calypso Carty (Pipersville, PA/Central Bucks West) chipped in with five rebounds and three points for the Pioneers.
