Utica, NY (11/5/2013) – The nationally-ranked No. 3/5 Utica College men's hockey team welcomes ECAC West opponents Elmira College and No. 9/9 Hobart College to the Utica Memorial Auditorium this weekend. The Pioneers will take on Elmira on Friday night and Hobart on Saturday night. Both games are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

LAST WEEKEND: The Utica College men's hockey team swept its opening weekend, downing conference opponent Nazareth 3-1 and SUNY Brockport 5-2 … Eight different players scored for Utica … UC started 2-0 for the fourth consecutive season … The Pioneer penalty-kill was outstanding, going a perfect 11-11.

BALANCED SCORING: Eight different Pioneers scored goals on the weekend, proving that UC is loaded with depth at the forward position … Thirteen different players recorded at least one point on the weekend … Senior Trever Hertz (Jaffray, British Columbia/Quesnel Millionaires (BCHL)) and junior Mike Baird (Oakville, Ontario/Huntsville (OJHL)) led the way for Utica with three points each, while seniors Adam Graff (Bear, DE/Syracuse Stars (EJHL)) and Rob Morton (New Hartford, NY/Merrimack (Hockey East)) chipped in with two points a piece.

ACTIVE LEADING SCORER: Senior Trever Hertz (Jaffray, British Columbia/Quesnel Millionaires (BCHL)) is the Pioneers active career scoring leader as he turned in his 80th career point in the Pioneers win over Brockprt on Saturday … Hertz ranks fourth all-time at UC with 37 goals and 47 career assists … Tim Coffman '12 is the Pioneers' all-time leading scorer (139 career points), Pioneer Hall of Famer Jimmy Sokol '05 ranks second (129) and recent graduate Evan Chlanda (Islip, NY/Springfield (EJHL)) '13 ranks third (93) … Utica senior Jon Gaffney (Dover, NJ/Springfield Blues (NAHL)) ranks fifth all-time with 73 career points … Utica's Louie Educated has 36 career points in the orange and blue and he also chipped in with a 42 point freshman campaign at Nichols for a total of 78 points at the collegiate level. 

FRESHMAN FITTING IN: Seven different freshmen played for UC on opening weekend … Defenseman Kevin Kirisits (Buffalo, NY/Brockville (CCHL)) was the only freshman to play in both games … Zac Lazzaro (Aston, PA/Kenai River (NAHL)) and Easton Powers (South Lyon, MI/Port Huron (NAHL)) each scored the first collegiate goal in the Pioneers' 5-2 win over Brockport … Goaltender Marcus Zelzer (Green Bay, WI/Kenai River (NAHL)) made 20 saves against Brockport in his first collegiate win.

OFFENSIVE DEFENSEMAN: Baird tallied three points and sophomore defender Donny Olivieri (Philadelphia, PA/Bismarck (NAHL)) tallied two points on the weekend … Olivieri, an ECAC West All Conference selection from a year ago, buried a power-play goal in the Pioneers' 3-1 win over Nazareth … Baird made a sensational move on the blue line against Brockport before ripping a shot that was deflected in by Trever Hertz (Jaffray, British Columbia/Quesnel Millionaires (BCHL)) on Saturday night.

GOOD GOALTENDING: UC senior Nick Therrien (Rochester, NH/NY Apple Core (EJHL)) and freshman Marcus Zelzer (Green Bay, WI/Kenai River (NAHL)) split the weekend set last weekend and it should be interesting to see if Head Coach Gary Heenan continues this trend against Elmira and Hobart … Therrien, an all-conference pick last year, let in one goal against Naz and stopped 29 shots and is expected to start on Friday night …
SCOUTING ELMIRA: Elmira comes to Utica after splitting the opening weekend against ECAC West opponents Neumann and Manhattanville … Jarryd ten Vaanholt leads the Soaring Eagles in points after scoring two goals and adding two assists … Josh Burnell registered three points (1g, 2a) on the weekend … Plattsburgh transfer Max Balaban score a goal and added an assist … Freshman goalie Sal Magliocco played both games for Elmira, stopping 67 of 73 shots.

RECENT MEETINGS AGAINST : The Pioneers won the season series 2-1 against the Soaring Eagles in three wild affairs last season … UC beat Elmira 11-2 early in the season before losing 7-4 the following night … In the final game in Elmira, the Pioneers jumped out to a 5-1 lead … Elmira stormed back but UC held on for the 5-4 victory.

SCOUTING HOBART: Three members of the Hobart College hockey team were recognized by the ECAC West conference office this week … First-year Nick Bingaman was named Rookie of the Week, and sophomore Lino Chimienti was tabbed the Goalie of the Week … Senior Tommy Fiorentino earned a spot on the league's weekly honor roll … The Statesmen, who started the season with a 5-0 win over Manhattanville and a 2-2 overtime tie with then No. 14 Neumann over the weekend, remained at No. 9 in the USCHO.com poll this week … Hobart moved up two spots to No. 9 in this week's D3hockey.com poll.

RECENT MEETINGS: The Pioneers won the season series 2-1 against the Statesmen last season in three pivotal games … UC scraped out a 5-3 road victory at Hobart despite being heavily outshot in the first matchup … Utica welcomed Hobart to the Aud for a decisive two-game set the weekend of Super Bowl Sunday … The fireworks began late in the Friday night game as the teams traded goals twice in the last six minutes … Hobart tied the game with eight seconds left before winning it in overtime … The final game of the season series featured a goaltender duel between Utica's Nick Therrien (Rochester, NH/NY Apple Core (EJHL)) and Hobart's Nick Broadwater … UC's Louie Educate (Chicago, IL/Aberdeen (NAHL)) ripped home a one-timer with five minutes remaining to give the Pioneers the important 1-0 victory.
