Late Goal Lifts Stevens Over Utica in Empire 8 Men's Soccer Championship

Anthony Caruso had a big game in net for the Pioneers
Box Score Hoboken, NJ (11/9/13)- The Utica College men's soccer team lost a heartbreaker 2-0 to top seeded and nationally-ranked No. 5 Stevens Institute of Technology in the Empire 8 Conference Championship game Saturday night. Senior Anthony Caruso (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow) was very impressive in goal for the Pioneers, stopping six shots on the evening.

After an even first 20 minutes, the Ducks began to control play. Stevens had an 8-1 shot advantage over Utica heading into halftime, however the score was knotted 0-0, thanks in part to the stellar play of Caruso.

The second half continued the same as the first, with neither team able to score the go-ahead. In the 82nd minute, however, Edward Rupp was finally able to get one passed Caruso to put Stevens up 1-0. Sophomore Carson Pryor extended the lead to 2-0 has he converted on a penalty kick with two minutes remaining.

Stevens improved to 16-1-1 as it captured its sixth consecutive Empire 8 title and NCAA Tournament birth. The Pioneers finish with an overall record of 10-10 and their best finish in program history. Seniors Chris Perkins (Charlton, MA/Saint John's of Shrewsbury), Kevin McAllister (Boxford, MA/Masconomet Regional) and Anthony Caruso (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow) were named to the All-Tournament team after impressive showings.
