UC Swept by Elmira on the Road - Pioneers Snap a Four Game Win Streak

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Elmira, NY (3-30-13) – The Utica College softball team was swept Saturday afternoon, on the road, by Empire 8 Conference rival Elmira College by scores of 1-0 and 4-0 in its conference opener. Freshman pitcher Abby Monroe (Watertown, NY/General Brown) tossed a three-hitter in game one allowing just one run while classmate Erica Colucci (Glenville, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) started game two on the mound and threw 3.2 innings allowing just four hits and two runs for the Pioneers.  UC was shutout both games while tallying just six total hits on the afternoon (2 in game-one/4 in game two).

UC returns to action Wednesday as it hosts non-conference foe Union College in a twilight doubleheader at Greenman Field.  First pitch for game-one is set for 3:30 p.m.  The Pioneers fall to 9-6 overall this season and 0-2 in league play while Elmira improved its overall record to 6-4 on the season and 2-0 in E8 play. The Soaring Eagles return to the diamond Wednesday as they travel to Williamsport, PA to face Pennsylvania College of Technology.

Elmira 1, Utica 0 (Game One) –

The first four innings of play featured 1-2-3 innings as no one reached base for either team.  Monroe, UC's hurler, retired the first 13 soaring Eagles while recording 11 ground outs while EC's pitcher Alex Puglisi also sat down the first 13 Pioneers registering an impressive six strikeouts.  Both squads touched their first bag in the fifth inning however did not pass second base before the end of the inning.  Junior Mallory Ingalls (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany) singled in the top of the fifth and was sacrificed to second while Alex Andrade singled for Elmira in the bottom of the inning and also was bunted over to second.  Neither team could convert. 

EC led off the bottom of the seventh with back-to-back hits and eventually scored the game winner on a throwing error to secure the game-one victory. 

Monroe evened her overall record at 4-4 while Puglisi moved to 3-2 on the season. Ingalls and Taylor Ellis (Willet, NY/Greene) registered UC's only two hits.

Elmira 4, Utica 0 (Game Two) –

Game two started very similar with each of the first three innings resulting in 1-2-3 outings for each team.  EC got on the board in the bottom of the fourth scoring two runs on three hits to take a 2-run advantage. 

UC put two base runners on the bags in the fifth as sophomore Alex Deyo (Schenectady, NY/Colonie Central) singled and junior Chelsea Monroe (Watertown, NY/General Brown) doubled however could not convert a score as it was eventually shut out by the host Soaring Eagles.

Colucci fell to 2-1 on the season despite fanning four and allowing just two runs on four hits.  Sophomore Briona Enny (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) relieved Colucci throwing 2.1 innings and allowed four hits and two runs as well on the afternoon.

Deyo, Monroe, senior Dominique Carcone (Frankfort, NY/New Hartford) and sophomore Courtney Fitzgerald (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) recorded UC's only four hits in game two.
