Utica 11, Potsdam 7 - Women's Lacrosse Final

Utica, NY (3/9/13)- The Utica College women's lacrosse team defeated SUNY Potsdam 11-7 Saturday afternoon to remain unbeaten on the season.  Sophomore Megan Kane (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) netted a career-high five goals in the win.

The Pioneers got off to a fast start, scoring just 23 seconds into the contest as sophomore Samantha Gebler (Vestal, NY/Vestal) netted her second of the year, assisted by freshman Courtney Wheeler (Ava, NY/Rome Free Academy).  Potsdam evened the score a minute and a half later as Bailey Weigel put in her fourth of the season, assisted by Denise Johns.

Patricia Kane (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) scored her ninth of the season with 23:45 remaining in the first half off a dish from Wheeler.  However, just 56 seconds later, Potsdam again tied the score, this time off the stick of Johns.

The Pioneers then took control, scoring four straight goals to close out the half.  First, freshman Colleen Dowling (Fairport, NY/Fairport) found the back of the net for her second of the year, assisted by Wheeler.  Then at 8:12, sophomore Megan Kane (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) took a feed from classmate Morgan DuPont (Wynantskill, NY/Averill Park) and scored her first of the day.  Just two minutes later, Patricia Kane (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) was awarded a free position and made it count, for her tenth of the season.  Megan Kane (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) capped off the first half scoring at 5:10 as she one-timed a pass from junior Julia Primps (Ossining, NY/Ossining).

UC went on a 4-1 run in the first 20 minutes of the second half as Wheeler, Megan Kane (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) (2), and DuPont each scored.  Potsdam tried to mount a comeback, scoring four of the games final five goals, but it was not enough as the Pioneers picked up their third straight win.

Both Stephanie Belanger (Lewiston, ME/Lewiston) and Potsdam's Jen Chmiel made seven saves on the day.  Wheeler finished with one goal and five assists, while Primps had two helpers.

UC (3-0) returns to action Wednesday as it hosts Russell Sage College.  Game time is set for 4 p.m.
