Men's Tennis Opens Up '13 Campaign on 3-Match Homestand

Utica, NY (4-2-13) – The Utica College men's tennis team opens up its 2013 campaign this week with three home matches in five days ... The Pioneers welcome Oswego State on Wednesday, April 3rd for their home-opener at the Turning Stone Tennis Courts ... The match is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.

Then, on Friday, April 6th, UC will host rival Elmira College in the Pioneers Empire 8 Conference opener set for 1 p.m. … Utica will wrap up its three-match home stretch against The Sage Colleges on Monday, April 8th with a 3:30 p.m. set volley.

Last Time Out: UC is currently 1-0 heading into the season after defeating Cazenovia, 9-0, back on Oct. 13th 2012 … Sophomore Jon Gorman (South Kingstown, RI/South Kingstown) led the Pioneers in the No. 1 spot as he shut out the Wildcats No. 1, 6-0 and 6-0 … Gorman teamed up with junior Dan Fadden in doubles competition and posted a 8-0 shutout en route to victory.

Senior Pioneers: Utica will look to its two local seniors Sam Cotrupe (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro High School ) and Mike Zaloom (Utica, NY/TR Proctor High School ) to step up and lead the way this Spring season … Cotrupe is from Whitesboro, NY and graduated from Whitesboro High School while Zaloom, a local Utica native, graduated from nearby T.R. Proctor High School.

Fadden and Pham Make up the Juniors: Daniel Fadden (Lakeland, NY/Bishop Ludden), from Lakeland, NY, and Phil Pham (Herkimer, NY/Herkimer), a junior transfer from Herkimer County Community College, look to have solid years for UC … Fadden returns for his third year while Pham will make his Pioneer debut this week.

The Underclassmen: The sophomore class includes Jon Gorman (South Kingstown, RI/South Kingstown) and Ryan Valle (Winthrop, ME/Winthrop High School) while newcomers Matt Rogers (East Syracuse, NY/Bishop Ludden) and Raphael Warnon (Rock Tavern, NY/Washingtonville ) look to have an immediate impact on the court … Rogers, also a member of the football team, is from East Syracuse, NY while Warnon, a member of the men's swim team, is from Rock Tavern, NY.

Schedule Ahead: Following the three-game home stand, UC hits the road for four out of five matches beginning Saturday, April 13th when it visits Empire 8 foe Nazareth College for a 1 p.m. set conference contest.
