Utica, NY (4/20/13)- The Utica College women's lacrosse team dropped a heartbreaker Saturday afternoon as it fell to visiting Elmira College, 6-5, in Empire 8 action. Freshman
Courtney Wheeler (Ava, NY/Rome Free Academy) led the Pioneers with three goals on the day.
Elmira jumped out to a 4-0 lead just four minutes into the contest as sophomore Ashton Hogan had a hand in three of the game's four opening goals. Sophomore
Morgan DuPont (Wynantskill, NY/Averill Park) netted her 23 of the season at 17:11 to get UC on the board. Two and a half minutes later, Wheeler netted her first of the day with an unassisted tally. Elmira added another tally with over nine minutes remaining to take a 5-2 lead into half time.
Wheeler scored her second of the day just a minute into the second half to bring Utica within two. DuPont added her team-leading 18th assist on the tally. UC outscored the Soaring Eagles 3-1 in the final 20 minutes of action however could not overcome the early deficit as they as it fall to 2-4 in the Empire 8.

Stephanie Belanger (Lewiston, ME/Lewiston) stopped six shots while allowing six scores and is now 8-5 overall on the season while EC's goalie Mary Kate Gellerman recorded 13 saves in the win.
The Pioneers are now 8-5 on the season including a 2-4 mark in the E8 and hit the road for their final two contests. UC heads to Keuka College on Wednesday before traveling to Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday, April 27th for its season-finale against the Ducks. Elmira evens its records at 7-7 overall and 3-3 in conference play and heads to Houghton College Wednesday to face the Highlanders.
