UC Drops E8 Opener at Home to Elmira

Utica, NY (4-6-13) – The Utica College men's tennis team dropped its first match of the season Saturday, 9-0, in the Empire 8 Conference opener to Elmira College.  The Pioneers were led by freshman two-sport athlete Matt Rogers (East Syracuse, NY/Bishop Ludden) who battled Elmira's Sam Pine in three sets but fell short (4-6, 6-4, 6-0).

UC falls to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in E8 action while the Soaring Eagles improve to 3-2 on the season and 1-1 in league play. The Pioneers return to action Monday as they wrap up their home stand against The Sage Colleges at the UC Tennis Courts.  The match is set for 4 p.m. EC is back in action Sunday, April 14th as it remains on the road against Stevens Institute of Technology.

Senior Mike Zaloom (Utica, NY/TR Proctor High School ) fell 6-1 in the first set before losing 6-4 in the second set of singles action while sophomore Jon Garman teamed up with junior Daniel Fadden (Lakeland, NY/Bishop Ludden) grabbing four points in doubles competition, however lost 8-4 en route to dropping their first match of the 2012-13 season.
