UTICA — Fifth place, over and over and over again.

That's been the fate of the Utica College women's lacrosse team the last five seasons. Fifth place in the Empire 8 Conference, and no playoff berth.

“We're sick of being just outside and looking in,” said Kristin St. Hilaire, now in her sixth season as head coach of the Pioneers and anxious to crack into the top four and play in the postseason. “We want to get there, and do good things when we get there.”

This might be the year. The Pioneers are off to the best start in school history at 6-1 – the only loss was in triple overtime to Clarkson – and they'll have a good idea of just how competitive they are in the E8 after this weekend, facing difficult road games today at St. John Fisher (1-0, 7-2) |and a Nazareth (1-0, 4-4) on Sunday.

“It's definitely a big weekend,” said Megan DuPont, a sophomore from Averill Park who is the team's leading scorer with 17 goals and nine assists for 26 points. “It will have a lot to say about whether we go to the Final Four or not.”
