Four Pioneers Earn ECAC Upstate Softball All-Star Status

Utica, NY (5/31/2013) - Junior outfielder Chelsea Monroe (Watertown, NY/General Brown), freshman pitcher Abby Monroe (Watertown, NY/General Brown), senior second baseman Dominique Carcone (Frankfort, NY/New Hartford) and freshman outfielder Cassie Smith (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central) were all named 2013 Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Upstate All-Stars in a release by the ECAC office on Friday.  The Monroe sisters each earned first-team recognition, while Carcone and Smith garnered second team recognition.

Chelsea Monroe (Watertown, NY/General Brown) finished the year with a .362 batting average and tied the school's single season record with ten home runs.  She finished the year with 38 RBIs on her way to being named the Empire 8 Conference Player of the Year.  Her slugging percentage of .714 ranks fifth all-time for a single season at UC and her 38 RBIs is fourth all-time. 

Abby Monroe (Watertown, NY/General Brown) tied the school's single season record for wins in a season with 19 and she also posted a 2.42 earned run average in 130.0 innings pitched.  She threw 11 complete game's, including her first career no-hitter in the Pioneers' shut out win over Alfred in the Empire 8 Conference Tournament.  She held opponents to a .239 batting average, which is second all-time, and she also averaged 5.06 strike outs per seven innings.  She posted four shut outs on the year and totaled 94 strikeouts. 

Carcone played in 45 games for the Pioneers and led the Empire 8 Conference with a .427 batting average (56-for-131).  She scored 25 runs and drove in 19 for the Pioneers.  Her .427 batting average ranks ninth all-time on the College's single season list.  56 hits ranks seventh all-time for a single season at UC and her 15 stolen bases is good for third on the College's single season list. 

Cassie Smith (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central) finished the season ranked third on the team with a .378 batting average (37-for-98). She also drove in 21 runs and scored 20 of her own.  She played in 39 games in her freshman campaign and posted an on base percentage of .440. 

As a team the Pioneers closed out their most storied season in school-history with a program-best 34 victories and they broke 17 different team records. The 2013 edition of the Pioneers set new school standards for batting average (.355), slugging percentage (.507), on base percentage (.407), most runs scored (322), most hits (482), most doubles (63), most home runs (46), most RBIs (289), most at bats (1359), games played (48), lowest opponent batting average (.245), stolen bases (78), total bases (689), innings pitched (312.1), most strikeouts (217), most put outs (937) and most assists (384).

The Pioneers won the Empire 8 Conference regular season title and the right to host the conference tournament for the first time in program-history.  After finishing second in the conference tournament, the Pioneers earned an at-large bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament for the first time in program-history.
