Chasity Eckert tallied two goals in the win
Box Score
Canton, NY (8/31/13)- The Utica College field hockey team cruised to an 8-1 season-opening victory over Cedar Crest College at the St. Lawrence Tournament on Saturday.  Juniors Hannah Mackey (Locke, NY/Moravia Central) and Chasity Eckert (Afton, NY/Afton Central) each netted two goals apiece to pace the Pioneers.

UC got on the board early as sophomore Colleen Dowling (Fairport, NY/Fairport) found the back of the net just 1:22 into the game.  Mackey padded the lead scoring two goals just 13 seconds apart and junior Adriana Surprenant (Utica, NY/New York Mills Jr-Sr High) tallied a goal of her own to put UC up 4-0 less that ten minutes into the game.

Two goals from Eckert and one from senior Jessica Franklin (Delevan, NY/Pioneer) capped off the first half scoring for the Pioneers.  The Falcons were able to cage a tally right before the half as sophomore Emily Rodenberger picked up her first goal of the season to spoil UC's hopes for a shutout.

Freshman Emily Gascon (Chenango Forks, NY/Greene)'s first career goal was the only mark in the second half as the Pioneers capped off an impressive opening day victory.

Surprenant, Lindsay James (Newry, ME/Tellstar Regional), and Jenna Dunne each tallied one assist, while Kells Casey (Sandwich, MA/Kimball Union Academy), Caitlyn Strapach (Union Springs, NY/Union Springs), and Olivia Cunningham (Bethlehem, NH/Profile) all split time in goal for Utica.  Sophomore Kaitlyn Brendlinger made 14 saves in the loss for Cedar Crest.

UC returns to action Sunday as it faces off against St. Lawrence University.  Game time is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
