Canton, NY (8/31/13)- The Utica College field hockey team cruised to an 8-1 season-opening victory over Cedar Crest College at the St. Lawrence Tournament on Saturday. Juniors
Hannah Mackey (Locke, NY/Moravia Central) and
Chasity Eckert (Afton, NY/Afton Central) each netted two goals apiece to pace the Pioneers.
UC got on the board early as sophomore
Colleen Dowling (Fairport, NY/Fairport) found the back of the net just 1:22 into the game. Mackey padded the lead scoring two goals just 13 seconds apart and junior
Adriana Surprenant (Utica, NY/New York Mills Jr-Sr High) tallied a goal of her own to put UC up 4-0 less that ten minutes into the game.
Two goals from Eckert and one from senior
Jessica Franklin (Delevan, NY/Pioneer) capped off the first half scoring for the Pioneers. The Falcons were able to cage a tally right before the half as sophomore Emily Rodenberger picked up her first goal of the season to spoil UC's hopes for a shutout.
Freshman
Emily Gascon (Chenango Forks, NY/Greene)'s first career goal was the only mark in the second half as the Pioneers capped off an impressive opening day victory.
Surprenant,
Lindsay James (Newry, ME/Tellstar Regional), and Jenna Dunne each tallied one assist, while
Kells Casey (Sandwich, MA/Kimball Union Academy),
Caitlyn Strapach (Union Springs, NY/Union Springs), and
Olivia Cunningham (Bethlehem, NH/Profile) all split time in goal for Utica. Sophomore Kaitlyn Brendlinger made 14 saves in the loss for Cedar Crest.
UC returns to action Sunday as it faces off against St. Lawrence University. Game time is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
