Volleyball Splits on Day One of Oswego Tournament

The Pioneers take on SUNYIT (10 a.m.) and Marywood University (2 p.m.) on Saturday
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Oswego, NY (9/13/13)- The Utica College volleyball team split a pair of games at the Oswego State Tournament Friday evening.  UC topped Wells College 3-0, before falling to St. Lawrence University 3-1.

After a close first set (28-26) against Wells, Utica took the second one 25-12, before downing the Express 25-23 in the third set.  Junior Briona Enny (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) had 21 digs and Alexis Lyon (Prospect, NY/Holland Patent) chipped in with 13 digs of her own. 

Freshman Brandi Blaszak (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) led the team with ten kills and added five aces, while Madison Bayer (Islip Terrace, NY/East Islip) had eight kills and four aces, and Laura Homer-Gunther (Sauquoit, NY/Sauquoit) had seven kills.  Lora Allen (Dolgeville, NY/Dolgeville) had a team-high 18 assists and Carly Lonczak (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) helped out with 11 assists.  Allen also recorded 10 service aces in the match. 

In the second match of the evening, the Pioneers fell to St. Lawrence 26-24, and 25-18 in the first two sets, before winning the third set 26-24 to stay alive.  However, it wasn't enough as the Saints took the fourth set 25-10.

Bayer led the way for UC with ten kills and had six digs, while Blaszak had seven kills.  Enny added ten digs and Allen collected 14 assists. 

The Pioneers (4-3)  return to action Saturday as they take on SUNYIT and Marywood University at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
