Louise Steele-Norton (Avondale, PA/Millbrook School) netted two goals as the Utica College field hockey team rallied from a 2-0 first half deficit to defeat host Geneseo State 3-2 in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon. Steele-Norton now has four goals this season and tied Shannon Rohacek '05 as the program's all-time career goal scoring leader with 46 goals.
The Knights opened the scoring at 11:14 as Sarah Malinak caged her fourth goal of the season as she collected a rebound and put it past
Kells Casey (Sandwich, MA/Kimball Union Academy) to put Geneseo up 1-0. Kerry Hosford and Kim Sherman assisted on the goal. Geneseo took a 2-0 lead less than six minutes later as Kayla DeAngelis scored her fourth of the year off a pass from Elena Hingston.
The Pioneers battled back at 31:17 as Steele-Norton scored her third of the year, off an assist from
Colleen Dowling (Fairport, NY/Fairport). Junior
Alaina Stojkovski (Liverpool, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) evened the score ten minutes into the second half as she found the back of the net for her third goal of the year, also assisted by Dowling. Steele-Norton gave the Pioneers the lead at 63:49 with her record-tying goal. The unassisted tally came off a one-on-one as she shot from 12 yards out.
Casey made eight saves in net for Utica, while her counterpart, Dayna Mercer also collected eight saves on the evening. The Pioneers improve to 5-1, marking their second-best start in program history.
Utica travels to Rochester, NY on Saturday to open up Empire 8 Conference play against St. John Fisher College. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
