Utica, NY (9/20/2013) – The Utica College men's soccer team opens up Empire 8 Conference play on Saturday night when the Pioneers host Nazareth College on the pitch at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.  The meeting between the two E8 foes is set to begin at 7 p.m.

LAST TIME THEY MET: Utica opened up conference play against host Nazareth last year on Sept. 15, 2012 … The Pioneers held the third ranked team in the East Region scoreless for over 66 minutes, but Naz caught fire late in the contest to earn a 3-1 victory … Nazareth, who was receiving votes in the NSCAA Division III National Poll, netted all three of its goals in a span of less than 18 minutes late in the second half to secure the victory.

RECENT MEETINGS AGAINST NAZ: The last time the Pioneers beat Nazareth was back in 2007 by the score of 3-1 at home … Naz has won five straight meetings against the Pioneers, with four of those five meetings being decided by just one goal … Eight of the last 12 games between the two teams have been decided by one goal.

HOME STAND: The Pioneers are in the midst of a three game home stand … UC hosted Hobart on Wednesday … The Pioneers battled a talented Hobart squad to a tough 3-2 double overtime loss at Gaetano Wednesday night … Both teams were held scoreless in the first half of play, and they exchanged goals in the second half to send the contest into overtime … Hobart scored in the 102nd minute to push the Statesmen (3-3) past the Pioneers (2-4) in the non-conference contest.

LEADING THE WAY: Senior Kevin McAllister (Boxford, MA/Masconomet Regional) and junior Shane Ruffing (Rochester, NY/Westborough) lead the Pioneers with five points a piece this season (two goals, one assist) … McAllister and Ruffing each have a game-winning goal this year … Jeffrey Cupka (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional) ranks third on the team with four points … Three other players have one goal and one assist including Jonathon Peterson (Bedford, NH/New Hampton), Dennis Runikera (Gaithersburg, MD/Northwood) and Greg Silvestro (West Sayville, NY/Connetquot). 

MCALLISTER CLIMBING THE ALL-TIME LADDER: Kevin McAllister (Boxford, MA/Masconomet Regional) now has 52 career points on 20 goals and 12 assists through 58 career games played.

BETWEEN THE PIPES: Senior goalie Anthony Caruso (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow) has 32 victories in 58 career games played … In the Pioneers' loss to Hobart on Wednesday he eclipsed the 200 career save barrier as he now has 205 … He has allowed 71 goals in those 58 games. 

ONE GOAL GAMES: Three of the Pioneers four losses this year have come by just one goal … The Pioneer defense has held its opponents to two goals or less in five of six contests.

SCOUTING NAZ: The Golden Flyers (3-3) have won two of their last three games, including a 2-1 victory over Fredonia and a 3-2 win over Oswego … Ryan Foley leads Naz with nine points on four goals and one assist … Three other Golden Flyers have four points – Ramez Al-Hebshi (two goals), Michael Batiste (two goals) and Yacov Zohn (one goal, two assists) … Naz is being outscore by its opponents 15-13 this year.
