Box Score 2 Oneonta, NY (9/21/13)- The Utica College volleyball team dropped both games on the second day of the Empire 8 crossover at Hartwick College, Saturday. UC fell 3-0 to both Houghton College and Stevens Institute of Technology.
Houghton Narrowly edged Utica in the first two sets of game one, winning 25-21, before taking the third set 25-17. Junior
Cassandra Manzer (Portcrane, NY/Chenango Valley) led the way with nine kills, while freshman
Brandi Blaszak (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) had seven kills and one block. Sophomore
Laura Homer-Gunther (Sauquoit, NY/Sauquoit) had four kills and added two blocks, while
Chelsea Lauria (Erieville, NY/Cazenovia),
Alyssa Nicotera (New York Mills, NY/New York Mills),
Liz Sacco (Franklin, Mass. /Franklin),
Cassi Brancato (Gloversville, NY/Mayfield) and
Briona Enny (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) also helped out on the attack. Sophomore
Lora Allen (Dolgeville, NY/Dolgeville) had a team-high 16 kills, while
Carly Lonczak (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) had ten and Lauria also added a helper. Enny collected 20 digs, while
Alexis Lyon (Prospect, NY/Holland Patent) had 15, and Nicotera added a season-high 14 digs.
Houghton improved to 9-2 on the year and will take on Roberts Wesleyan College on Wednesday.
The second match was all Stevens as the Ducks cruised to a 3-0 victory (25-15, 25-16, 25-13). Manzer once again led the squad in kills (six) while Enny had a team-high seven digs and Allen added seven assists.
Stevens moves its impressive record to 14-1, while Utica drops to 4-9.
The Pioneers return to the court Wednesday as they host Nazareth College in Empire 8 action. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
