Utica, NY (9/24/2013) – Plattsburgh's Matt Hamilton scored the lone goal of the contest in the 81st minute to help lift the visiting Cardinals past Utica College 1-0 Tuesday night on the turf at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium. Hamilton's second goal of the season came off a crossing pass assist from the foot of Nick Parrella to help the Cardinals (6-1-1) get back in the win column after dropping their first contest of the season against Skidmore over the weekend.
Utica (3-5, 1-0 Empire 8) suffered its fourth one-goal loss of the season and capped a three game home stand with a 1-2 record in the stretch. Plattsburgh has now defeated UC in three consecutive meetings, all by a slim one goal margin.
Utica got the better of the visitors in the first half, out shooting the Cardinals by a 3-1 margin, and the Pioneers also earned a 7-2 lead in corner kick opportunities, but the score remained stagnant at 0-0 as the halftime horn sounded.
The second half proved to be all Plattsburgh as the Cardinals outshot the home squad 8-1 and earned six corner kicks while eventually punching home the game-winner with less than ten minutes to go in the contest.
Utica's
Anthony Caruso (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow) notched three saves in net for the Pioneers, all in the second half, while Mitchell Jordan was called upon to make just one save in his first shutout and third victory of the season. Mitchell now boasts an unblemished 3-0 record in net for Plattsburgh this year.
UC's leading scorer
Kevin McAllister (Boxford, MA/Masconomet Regional) tallied the only shot on goal of the evening for the Pioneers. McAllister has three goals and one assist so far this season.
The Pioneers return to the pitch on Saturday when they travel to Rochester, NY to take on St. John Fisher (2-5-1, 0-1 Empire 8) in a pivotal Empire 8 Conference contest at Growney Stadium. The match is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. The contest marks the second E8 game of the season for both squads. Fisher opened conference play with a 4-0 loss to host Ithaca College on Saturday. The Pioneers are currently 1-0 in conference play after downing Nazareth College 1-0 on Saturday night.
