Volleyball Splits on Day One of Wildcat Classic

Briona Enny totaled 20 digs over the two matches
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Utica, NY (9/27/13)- The Utica College volleyball split two games on the opening day of the Wildcat Classic at SUNYIT on Friday night.  The Pioneers snapped their eight-game losing streak with a 3-1 win over Cazenovia College in the first game, before falling 3-1 to SUNY Canton in the second match.

UC finished the first match 25-11, 23-25, 25-12, and 25-20 seal the victory.  Junior Alyssa Nicotera (New York Mills, NY/New York Mills) had a season-high 13 kills and added four digs to lead the Pioneers.  Freshman Brandi Blaszak (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) has 12 kills and added 13 blocks, while sophomore Laura Homer-Gunther (Sauquoit, NY/Sauquoit) had a career-high 22 blocks.  Junior Briona Enny (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) had 13 digs and Lora Allen (Dolgeville, NY/Dolgeville) added 25 assists in the outing.

Blaszak led the team with seven kills and a career-high 16 blocks in the second match.  Homer-Gunther and Cassandra Manzer (Portcrane, NY/Chenango Valley) each tallied eight blocks in the match and Enny added seven digs in the effort. 

The Pioneers move to 5-11 on the year.  They will take on D'Youville College at 10 a.m. on Saturday, followed by a match up against Alfred State at 12 p.m.
