Late Goal for SUNYIT Guides Wildcats Past Utica

Box Score
SUNYIT 1, Utica College 0 - Men's Soccer Final

Utica, NY (9/4/2013) – SUNYIT senior Diego Montaleza broke a scoreless tie with 6:26 remaining in the contest off a free kick from 25 yards out to lift the visiting Wildcats to a 1-0 victory over Utica College on the turf at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium Wednesday evening.

The Pioneers (0-3), who outshot the visitors 13-3 on the afternoon, look to rebound on Saturday back at home when they take on Baruch College in a non-conference contest that begins at 6 p.m.

UC had two excellent scoring opportunities in the contest which included Shane Ruffing (Rochester, NY/Westborough) being stopped on the doorstep by SUNYIT senior goalie Malick Faye and Greg Silvestro (West Sayville, NY/Connetquot) hitting a post in the second half.  Faye finished the night with four saves for the Wildcats.

The Pioneers also earned an 8-2 corner kick advantage.  Utica senior goalie Anthony Caruso (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow) made one save on the afternoon.  The contest also featured five yellow cards (four for SUNYIT).

Montaleza's second half goal came off a free kick from just outside the box and traveled through several players in front before finding the far left post and deflecting into the back of the net. He now has a team-high five goals in three games for the Wildcats (2-0-1).

The Pioneers snapped a five game winning streak against SUNYIT.
