Utica College 2, Baruch College 1 - Men's Soccer Final
Utica, NY (9/7/2013) – The Utica College men's soccer team jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first 56 minutes and held on for a 2-1 victory over visiting Baruch College to land the Pioneers their first win of the season on the turf at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium Saturday night. Sophomore
Greg Silvestro (West Sayville, NY/Connetquot) and junior
Shane Ruffing (Rochester, NY/Westborough) each netted a goal to help lead the Pioneers (1-3).
UC got on the board in the 19th minute of the first half to snap a two-game scoreless streak when Silvestro converted into the upper left corner after a beautiful lead pass from senior
Jonathon Peterson (Bedford, NH/New Hampton). Peterson now leads UC with three points this season.Â
The Pioneers went up 2-0 just over ten minutes into the second half after a long ball was sent in by
Chris Stashko (Apalachin, NY/Apalachin) right to the foot of Kevin McAlliser, McAllister then slipped a pass to the left side to Ruffing, who buried the eventual game-winner into the upper left side of the net.Â
Baruch countered with its lone goal of the game in the 70th minute after a crossing pass into the box from team-leading scorer Victor Tlepshev connected with the foot of Edward Humphreys to cut the Pioneer lead in half.
The UC defense was staunch for the remainder of the evening as the Pioneers snapped their three game season-opening slide. Senior goalie
Anthony Caruso (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow) made three saves in net for the Pioneers.
Bearcat goalie Guy Sharav came on in relief of Helder Correia in the second half and did not allow a goal while stopping three shots of his own.Â
The Pioneers outshot the Bearcats 15-8 on the afternoon and they also earned a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks.Â
Utica will hit the road next on Wednesday when it travels to Wells College to take on the Express at 5 p.m.
