Pittsford, NY (January 17, 2014) – Nazareth College's Lindsey Kelly netted the game-winner with two seconds left on the clock to lead the Golden Flyers to a 54-53 come-from-behind victory over visiting Utica College Friday night at Kidera Gymnasium. Naz used an 18-4 run in the final 10:55 of the contest to rally from a 16 point second half deficit. The Golden Flyers also held the Pioneers to 1-of-19 shooting from the floor in the final ten minutes of the contest to earn the victory.
Utica's
Bridget Greenwald (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) netted a team-best 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Junior
Samantha Stayer (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone) continued her solid play with 14 points, while classmate
Marissa Kahane (Sayville, NY/Sayville) added eight points on 2-of-4 shooting from behind the arc.
Utica has lost six of its last seven and the Pioneers record fell to 5-9 overall and 0-5 in the Empire 8. UC returns to the hardwood on Saturday when it travels to St. John Fisher College to take on the Cardinals at 4 p.m.
Utica opened the contest on a 14-5 run in a span of 7:05 to take the early lead.
Bridget Greenwald (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) and
Marissa Kahane (Sayville, NY/Sayville) combined for nine of the Pioneer' points in the initial run. Naz answered with a 14-7 run of its own to knot the score at 21-21 with 6:21 left in the first half of play.
With the score tied the Pioneers turned it up a notch by going on a 14-0 run in a span of 5:59 to take a commanding 35-21 lead with just 22 seconds to go in the first half. Stayer, Miceli and Greenwald each netted four points in the stretch as the UC defense held the Golden Flyers to 0-for-8 from the floor while causing four turnovers.
Naz broke its 6:14 scoreless streak with a bucket before the half and the Pioneers led by 12 points, 35-23, as the halftime horn sounded.
UC maintained its double-digit lead by outscoring the home squad 14-13 in the first 9:03 of the second and the Pioneers led 49-36 with 10:57 left in regulation. At that point Naz turned it up and finished the game on an 18-4 run to earn the one point victory. Julia Brew led the Golden Flyers down the stretch with six points in the game-winning run. Kelly finished the night with a game-high 20 points, including the game-winner in the closing moments, to pace the home team.
The Pioneers led for 81.3% (32:21) of the contest and its largest lead of the game was 16 points early in the second half. UC converted 16 Naz turnovers into 16 points on the opposite end.
The Pioneers shot 13-for-27 from the floor in the first half, but the shots would not fall in the second half as they finished the game shooting 6-for-37 in the final 20 minutes. The Golden Flyers outscored Utica 31-18 in the second half to earn the victory.
