Box Score Utica, NY (1-25-14) – The Utica College women's basketball team lost, 71-60, to visiting Stevens Institute of Technology Saturday in Empire 8 action at the Clark Athletic Center. UC was guided by sophomore
Mary Miceli (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) who had a team-high 16 points while senior
Bridget Greenwald (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) tallied a double-double on 11 points and 15 boards.
The Pioneers have dropped four straight, all in conference, and fall to 5-12 overall and remain winless in E8 play at 0-8. UC returns to action Friday to welcome Alfred University for the final game of a three-game home stand. Stevens improves to 11-6 on the season and evens their league record at 4-4 and returns to the hardwood Friday as well to welcome St. John Fisher in Hoboken, NJ.
Stevens jumped out to an early lead using a 19-11 run over the first nine minutes of play as seven different Ducks scored led by Benjamin's eight points. SIT would continue its push as it closed out the half with a 21-17 strut to take a ten point lead into the break, 38-28.
The Pioneers kept up with the Ducks over the first ten minutes of the second half as the teams were 13-13at the halfway mark. UC would pull to within nine points of the lead, 64-56, with 2:40 remaining but could not get any closer as Stevens went on to a double-digit victory.
Samantha Stayer (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone) and
Kelsey Cowell (Schenectady, NY/Mohonasen) combined for 17 points and nine boards in the loss while
Marissa Kahane (Sayville, NY/Sayville) chipped in with eight points off the bench.
Four Ducks scored in double-digits for the visitors including Avis Benjamin who netted a game-high 17 points. Erica Guketlov and Miranda Ripken combined for 20 points (10 each) while Kaitlyn Astel added 11 off the bench.
