Ithaca, NY (10/10/14)- The Utica College volleyball team dropped its opening matches at the Ithaca College Invitational Friday as it fell to Kings College 3-1 and Wells College 3-0.
In the loss to Kings, the Pioneers narrowly dropped the first set, falling 25-20 to the Monarchs. Utica rebounded to take the second set 25-11, however could not swing the momentum as Kings went on to take the next two sets and secure the 3-1 victory.
Freshman
Alaina Wickwire (Towanda, PA/Towanda) led Utica with 12 kills and added 17 digs, followed by junior
Laura Homer-Gunther (Sauquoit, NY/Sauquoit), who had eight kill, and four total blocks. Five players had 10 or more digs, led by senior
Briona Enny (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) (26), Wickwire,
Lora Allen (Dolgeville, NY/Dolgeville) (12),
Brandi Blaszak (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) (10), and
Alexis Lyon (Prospect, NY/Holland Patent) (10). Allen also helped out with 30 assists for the Pioneers.
In the second match of the day, the Pioneers fell to Wells College in straight sets, 25-17, 25-19, 25-17. Sophomore
Brandi Blaszak (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) led the squad with seven kills, followed by
Alaina Wickwire (Towanda, PA/Towanda) (five), and
Samantha Hoerning (Farmingville, NY/Sachem East) (four).
Briona Enny (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) once again led the team in digs (11) and
Lora Allen (Dolgeville, NY/Dolgeville) posted a team-best 18 assists.
The Pioneers return to action Saturday as they face host Ithaca College (11 a.m.) followed by a match up against Carnegie Mellon University (1:15 p.m.).
