Stashko Nets Game-Winner in OT to Guide Utica Past Canton

CANTON, NY – Senior Chris Stashko (Apalachin, NY/Apalachin) netted his third goal of the season in the 94th minute to lift the Utica College men's soccer team to a 1-0 overtime victory over host SUNY Canton on Wednesday afternoon.  Freshman forward Gustaf Petersen (Stockholm, Sweden/Blackebergs) delivered a nifty heel pass to the foot of Stashko, and he finished on the right side, to break the scoreless tie as the Pioneers came away with the overtime victory.  The assist for Petersen marked the first of his collegiate career.

The Pioneers snapped a five game winless streak, and came away with their first overtime victory of the season, as their record improved to 5-7-3 overall.

The Pioneers are still in the hunt for the fourth and final spot in the Empire 8 Conference Tournament, as they boast a 2-3 record in E8 play, and currently sit in a three way tie with Nazareth and St. John Fisher for fourth place.  UC has two conference games remaining, beginning with a must-win contest against visiting St. John Fisher College at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium on Saturday (4 p.m.).

Utica senior goalie David Abdou (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) had another stellar night in net for the Pioneers, posting a career-high 13 saves as he picked up his fifth win of the season. Canton outshot UC 26-14 and the Kangaroos also earned a 5-2 advantage in corner kick opportunities.

Canton's record moved to 9-6-1 and the Kangaroos have now lost three of their last four games. Patrick Anunziatta made five stops in net for Canton.

Stashko now has a career-high 10 points this season on three goals and four assists.  He also has 20 points (five goals, 10 assists) over the course of 63 career games at Utica.
