SYRACUSE, NY – The Utica College men's hockey team tied nationally-ranked No. 2 Oswego State 4-4 in the first collegiate hockey game to ever be played in Syracuse University's Carrier Dome on Saturday afternoon. UC senior forward
Louie Educate (Chicago, IL/Aberdeen (NAHL)) netted a pair of goals in front of a new NCAA Division III hockey attendance record of 7,047 fans. Freshman
Anthony McVeigh (Kemptville, Ontario/Carleton Place (CCHL)) and senior forward
Peter LaFosse (Merrimack, NH/Kimball Union Academy) also each netted a goal for the Pioneers.
Utica (1-4-2) snapped a three game slide and handed Oswego (5-0-2) their second tie of the weekend.
UC fell into an early 2-0 hole in the first period after Mitchell Herlihey and Chris Raguseo each netted a goal for the Lakers. The Pioneers answered with two consecutive goals in a span of 2:10 midway through the second period. Educate cut Oswego's lead to 2-1, 7:08 into the second period and McVeigh then tied the game up at the 9:18 marker for the Pioneers.
Oswego did not waste any time, taking the lead right back 1:20 later, when Chris Watrstreet put the Lakers on top 3-2 at the 10:38 marker.
The Pioneers headed into the third period trailing 3-2, but it didn't not take long to tie the score as LaFosse found the back of the net, off an assist from
Trent Samuels-Thomas (West Hartford, CT/Omaha (USHL)), just 51 seconds into the final stanza. It was LaFosse's third goal of the year and Samuels-Thomas added his sixth assist of the season.
Once again Oswego had the answer as they snatched the lead right back less than two minutes later.
Educate netted the game tying goal at the 12:34 marker of the third period, on the power-play, to knot the score at 4-4. The goal was his third of the season and he is now tied with Samuels-Thomas for second on the team with seven points. Senior
Justin Hogan (Val Therese, Ontario/Brooks Bandits (AJHL)) assisted on what proved to be the final goal of the game.
Both teams were held scoreless in the overtime period as they skated to a hard fought tie.
Utica outshot Oswego 36-30 on the afternoon, and did not commit a penalty the entire contest, to help keep Oswego's top-ranked power-play unit under wraps. On the other hand, the Pioneers finished the night 1-for-2 with a man advantage.
Utica goalie
Mike Taffe (Moose Lake, MN/Amarillo (NAHL)) made 26 stops in net as he moved his record to 1-1-1 on the year.
The Pioneers return to action next Friday when they host Hamilton College for a non-conference contest at the Aud at 2 p.m.
