Geneva, NY (11/8/14)- The Utica College women's hockey team picked up a win in its season opener as it downed host William Smith, 2-0, in ECAC West action Saturday evening at the Cooler in Geneva, NY.

Keira Goin (Dobbs Ferry, NY/Hotchkiss School) picked up her first career shutout in just her second start as she stopped all 13 shots she faced. Senior
Nicole Schwartz (Danville, CA/San Jose Sharks) and junior
Mackenzie Roy (Clinton, NY/Clinton) each netted goals for UC.

After a scoreless opening period, Schwartz broke the deadlock at 6:54 of the second as she netted her first of the season, on the powerplay. Freshman
Samantha Husak (Jackson, MI/Team Detroit) assisted on Schwartz's tally. Roy added an insurance goal just under five minutes into the final frame, also on the powerplay. Seniors
Samantha Pucci (Pearl River, NY/Connecticut Polar Bears) and
Kelsey Dowdall (Smiths Falls, ONT/Nepean) assisted on the play.

Freshman Maggie Salmon made 36 saves in the loss for the Herons.Â
The teams return to Utica Sunday to wrap up the series. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
