Alfred, NY (February 14, 2014) – The Utica College women's basketball team snapped an eight game slide and won its first Empire 8 Conference contest of the season as the Pioneers topped host Alfred University 84-79 Friday night. Utica used a big 17-2 run late in the contest to earn the four point victory.
UC's
Bridget Greenwald (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) recorded her 10th double-double of the season as she registered 16 points and tied her season-high with 17 rebounds. Utica's
Mary Miceli (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) netted a game-high 25 points on 4-of-7 shooting from behind the arc, while junior
Samantha Stayer (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone) added 19 points.
Utica improved to 6-16 overall and 1-11 in the Empire 8, while Alfred dropped to 6-16 and 1-10 in the E8. The Pioneers will remain on the road Saturday when they take on host Ithaca College at 4 p.m.
The contest featured eight ties and four lead changes, and the Pioneers largest lead of the game came in the first half after a 13-4 run in a span of 5:54 pushed the UC lead to 36-29 with 2:36 to go in the first half of play. Alfred answered immediately with a 12-3 run in the final 2:36 of the half to take a 41-39 advantage as the first half horn sounded.
Alfred extended its lead to as many as 11 points, 73-62, with 7:34 remaining until Utica used a 17-2 run in a span of 3:25 to take a 79-75 lead with 3:09 remaining. Alfred was able to cut its deficit to one point, 80-79, with 1:42 to go, but the Pioneers were a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line down the stretch and held the host Saxons scoreless in the final 1:41 to earn the victory.
The Pioneers scored 36 of their points in the paint and added 15 second chance points to earn the conference victory.
Marissa Kahane (Sayville, NY/Sayville) netted 11 points off the bench for UC. Freshman
Calypso Carty (Pipersville, PA/Central Bucks West) grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds and chipped in with eight points for the visitors.
Rachel Stedman came off the bench and scored a team-high 18 points for the Saxons.
Utica's
Bridget Greenwald (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) is now averaging 11.3 rebounds and 10.8 points per game for UC.
