Oswego Tops #8 Utica 2-1 in Women's Hockey

Jennifer Hamel had 17 saves in the loss
Box Score Utica, NY (2-15-14)- The nationally ranked No. 8 Utica College women's hockey team fell to ECAC West rival Oswego State 2-1 Saturday afternoon at the Utica Memorial Auditorium. The Lakers now take sole possession of third place in the league standings, three points ahead of the Pioneers.

Oswego used one goal each in the first and second periods, both shorthanded tallies off the stick of senior Melissa Seamont, to top the Pioneers. UC struggled with the man advantage today, going 0-for-5 in the first two periods and giving up two goals. Prior to today, the Pioneers had only allowed one shorthanded goal all season.

UC was able to convert on power play opportunity in the third period as junior Nicole Kieffer (Rome, NY/Lysander Lightning) riffled home a shot from the point. Junior Louise Steele-Norton (Avondale, PA/Millbrook School) and senior Megan Myers (Las Vegas, NV/LA Selects) assisted on Keiffer's second goal of the season. With the assist, Myers moves into second all-time on the College's career scoring list with 135 points. She passes All-American and Pioneer Hall of Famer Stephanie Price '07, who compiled 134 point in four years at Utica.

Jennifer Hamel (Ithaca, NY/Northwood School) made 17 stops in net for Utica, while her counterpart, Bridget Smith, had 29 saves. UC drops to 15-7 (8-5 ECAC West) on the year, while Oswego improves to 15-6-1 (9-3-1 ECAC West). Both teams meet again on Sunday in Oswego to wrap up the series. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
