Box Score Oswego, NY (2/16/14)- For the second time in as many days, the nationally ranked No. 8 Utica College women's hockey team fell to ECAC West rival, Oswego State 2-1. UC remains in fifth place in the conference standings, setting up a key final series against fourth seeded SUNY Potsdam next weekend. Potsdam is currently just one point ahead of Utica in the conference standings.
The Pioneers got on the board first as junior
Kelsey Dowdall (Smiths Falls, ONT/Nepean) scored just 3:45 into the contest. Dowdall's unassisted tally was her fifth of the year. The Lakers evened the score at 14:30 as Melissa Seamont scored her third of the weekend off assists from Emma Smetaniuk and Olivia Boersen. The score remained deadlocked through the second period, setting up a huge final frame.
Seamont connected with Smetaniuk and Boersen again at 9:33 of the third with a power play tally to give Oswego a 2-1 lead. Despite firing 14 shots on goal in the third, Utica was not able to get the equalizer as the Pioneers fell to 15-8 (8-6 ECAC West) on the season.
Senior
Jennifer Hamel (Ithaca, NY/Northwood School) made 28 saves on the day, matching her counterpart, Bridget Smith. Smith also had 28 stops to help Oswego move to 16-6-1 overall and 10-3-1 ECAC West.
UC wraps up the regular season next weekend with a home-and-home series against SUNY Potsdam. UC travels to Potsdam for a 3 p.m. face off on Saturday, with both teams coming to Utica for the finale on Sunday at 4 p.m.
