Softball Goes 2-1 on Final Day in Florida

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 Clermont, FL (3/22/14)- The Utica College softball team went 2-1 on its final day at the DOT Richardson Spring Games in Clermont Florida.  UC topped Allegheny College 4-2, before splitting a double-header agaisnt Fredonia State. 

Utica 4, Allegheny 2- FINAL
The Pioneers jumped out to a 3-0 lead behind a solo home run by Courtney Fitzgerald (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) and two runs by Chelsea Monroe (Watertown, NY/General Brown) and Alysa Russell (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville).  UC added another tally in the fifth inning as Abby Monroe (Watertown, NY/General Brown) drove in Meriah Beauvais (Stockbridge, NY/Stockbridge)

The Gators threatened in the top of the seventh, plating two runs, however that was all the Utica defense would allow as it went on to its fourth straight victory.  Russell and senior Meghan Matan (Latham, NY/Shaker) each went 2-for-3 at the plate, while sophomore Erica Colucci (Glenville, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) gave up just four hits and struck out three in a full seven innings of work.

Utica 4, Fredonia 2- FINAL
The Pioneers stretched their win streak to five as they topped Fredonia 4-2 in the first game of a double-header.  UC jumped out to an early lead, plating two runs in the first inning as Chelsea Monroe (Watertown, NY/General Brown) and Christy Traglia (Mohawk, NY/Mohawk) each scored.  The Blue Devils tallied one run in the fourth and added another in the sixth, setting up the deciding seventh inning.  UC was up to the test, however, as Erica Colucci (Glenville, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) drove in Meriah Beauvais (Stockbridge, NY/Stockbridge), and then scored a run of her own on a passed ball. 
Meghan Matan (Latham, NY/Shaker) was UC's top batter, going 3-for-4 with one RBI, while Traglia and Alysa Russell (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville) each had two hits.  Abby Monroe (Watertown, NY/General Brown) and Erica Colucci (Glenville, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) combined for four strikeouts and allowed just six hits in the game. 

Utica 4, Fredonia 7- FINAL
The Blue Devils got revenge in the second game, as they snapped UC's winning streak with a 7-4 win.  Chelsea Monroe (Watertown, NY/General Brown) and Alysa Russell (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville) each went 2-for-4 with one run scored, while Russell also drove in a run.  Kassidy Ogren (Albany, NY/Colonie Central), Meghan Matan (Latham, NY/Shaker), and Christy Traglia (Mohawk, NY/Mohawk) also had hits, but it was not enough as Fredonia tallied three runs in the sixth inning to seal the victory.  Erica Colucci (Glenville, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) struck out one and gave up three earned runs in four innings of work, while Abby Monroe (Watertown, NY/General Brown) shouldered the loss as she had one strike out and allowed one earned run in the final three innings. 

UC wraps up its spring training trip with a 5-4 record.  The Pioneers travel to Skidmore on Wednesday for a non-conference double-header beginning at 3:30 p.m.  UC opens up home play on Friday as it hosts Houghton College.  First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
