Meghan Matan (Latham, NY/Shaker) hit an RBI double in the ninth inning to score the winning run as the Pioneers came from behind in game two to salvage a split with Stevens Institute of Technology in Empire 8 action Sunday afternoon. Stevens won game one 6-1 before Matan lifted UC to a 5-4 win in game two. The Pioneers move to 13-6 on the year with a 2-2 record in the Empire 8. Stevens is now 22-6 and is in first place in the E8 with a 6-2 record in league play.

Cassie Smith (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central) was 5-for-8 on the day with one RBI and classmate
Alysa Russell (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville) extended her hit streak to 16 games as she tallied two hits in each game. Russell was 4-for-8 on the day with two RBI and two runs scored. Junior
Christy Traglia (Mohawk, NY/Mohawk) also had an impressive outing, going 4-for-7 in the two games with one RBI, one run scored, and one stolen base.
Utica 1, Stevens 6- Game One FinalThe Pioneers were shutout through the first four innings of game one before Russell drove in
Chelsea Monroe (Watertown, NY/General Brown) to cut the Stevens lead to 5-1. That was the only run Stevens would give up in the game. Traglia was a perfect 2-for-2, while Russell and Smith were each 2-for-3 at the plate.

Courtney Fitzgerald (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) also had hits for the Pioneers.

Meghan Matan (Latham, NY/Shaker) to cut the lead to 3-1. Stevens responded, however, with one run in the fifth inning to regain the three-run lead. UC mounted a dramatic comeback in the seventh inning, scoring three runs to send the game to extra innings.
Christy Traglia (Mohawk, NY/Mohawk) started the comeback effort as she doubled to left field to score
Chelsea Monroe (Watertown, NY/General Brown).
Alysa Russell (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville) followed that up with a double of her own to score Traglia.
Cassie Smith (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central) capped off the comeback as she singled to second base, scoring Russell, before Matan's ninth inning heroics gave UC the win.
UC had 14 hits in game two as Matan finished 4-for-5 at the plate, while Smith had three hits.
Chelsea Monroe (Watertown, NY/General Brown), Traglia and Russell each had two hits and Fitzgerald added one. Monroe and Matan also had one stolen base each.
Abby Monroe (Watertown, NY/General Brown) had five strikeouts in the first five innings, before
Erica Colucci (Glenville, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) struck out four and did not allow a run in the final four innings to collect her fifth win of the season.
The Pioneers return to action Tuesday as they travel to Skidmore College for non-conference action. The first pitch of the double-header is scheduled for 4 p.m.
