Box Score 2 Rochester, NY (4/27/14)- The Utica College softball team split with host St. John Fisher College Sunday in Empire 8 Conference action. Fisher took the first game in walk off fashion, winning 3-2, before the Pioneers battled back to earn a 5-1 victory in game two.
The Pioneers move to 20-9 on the year and 5-5 in the Empire 8 Conference. UC is currently fourth in the Empire 8 Conference and controls its own destiny headed into the final E8 series of the year on Monday. If Utica earns at least one win against Alfred, it will advance to the Empire 8 Conference Tournament for the second straight year. If the Pioneers lose both games, they will finish in a three-way tie for fourth place, but lose the tie-breaker, eliminating them from playoff contention.
Utica 2, St. John Fisher 3- Game One FinalSeven different players tallied one hit, but it was not enough as UC fell 3-2 in the first game of the double-header. After two full scoreless innings, Fisher took a 2-0 lead in the third. Utica rebounded in the fourth as
Cassie Smith (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central) doubled to left center to score
Meghan Matan (Latham, NY/Shaker) and
Courtney Fitzgerald (Albany, NY/Colonie Central).
The score remained the same until the seventh inning as the Cardinals were able to plate the winning run on a passed ball to earn the walk off victory.

Courtney Fitzgerald (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) drove in
Chelsea Monroe (Watertown, NY/General Brown). The score remained the same for the next five and a half innings until UC's bats came alive to plate four runs.
Freshman
Kassidy Ogren (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) got things going in the top of the seventh with her third home run of the year, scoring
Cassie Smith (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central) and
Meghan Matan (Latham, NY/Shaker). Then, a triple to right center by
Chelsea Monroe (Watertown, NY/General Brown) scored
Taylor Ellis (Willet, NY/Greene) to put Utica up 5-0. A solo home run by senior Jessica D'Angelo in the bottom half of the inning spoiled UC's shutout, however that was all the Utica defense would allow as
Erica Colucci (Glenville, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) held on for her eighth win of the year. Colucci had six strikeouts and gave up just three hits on the day.
Chelsea Monroe (Watertown, NY/General Brown) had a big second game, going 3-for-4 at the plate, while Ogren was 2-for-3. Fitzgerald, Matan, Smith, and Ellis also had hits.
Utica returns to action Monday as it hosts Alfred University. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
