Box Score
Utica, NY (April 5, 2014) – The Utica College women's lacrosse team trailed by just one goal at the half but visiting and nationally-ranked No. 17 St. John Fisher College outscored the Pioneers 6-1 in the final 30 minutes to secure an 11-5 Empire 8 Conference victory at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Utica junior Morgan DuPont (Wynantskill, NY/Averill Park) registered two assists to eclipse her own school-record for assists in a single season (23).

Senior Julia Primps (Ossining, NY/Ossining) and freshman Rebecca Plunkett (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park) led the Pioneers with two goals apiece, but it was not enough as UC dropped to 5-3 overall and 1-2 in conference play. Plunkett ranks second on the team with 22 goals this season.

Fisher has now won three of its last four games and improved to 8-3 overall and 3-1 in the Empire 8. The Cardinals were led by five points each from Samantha Barton (four goals, one assist) and Taylor Hughes (three goals, two assists).

It was a back and forth contest in the first half as the lead changed hands three times and the score was tied on four occasions. The Pioneers led 3-2 after Primps scored her fourth goal of the season with 13:27 left in the first half.  Fisher answered by scoring three of the game's next four goals to take a 5-4 lead into the half.

The Cardinals scored five goals in the first 15:17 of the second half to essentially seal the victory.  Utica was able to cut the Fisher lead to 10-5 with 8:31 to go, but that was as close as the Pioneers would get as the Cardinals came away with the six goal victory.

Megan Kane (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) added one goal and one assist for the Pioneers as she remains in the team lead with 29 points (24 goals, five assists) this season. Sophomore Courtney Wheeler (Ava, NY/Rome Free Academy) added an assist and she now has 12 points in her last four outings.

UC goal Erin Jacobson (Staten Island, NY/Curtis) stopped six shots in the loss while her counterpart Caroline Trpcevski made five saves in her seventh win of the year.

Fisher outshot Utica 21-15 and made the most of its chances in the second half, scoring on six of the nine shots that the Cardinals took.

Utica won the draw control battle 12-7, but Fisher earned the advantage in ground balls (28-21).

Plunkett, Wheeler and Patricia Kane (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) each scooped up a team-high four ground balls for the Pioneers. Abbie Reed came off the bench for the Cardinals and tallied a team-best five ground balls.

The Pioneers close out a four game home stand on Sunday when they host Elmira in Empire 8 play at 1 p.m. After tomorrow, UC will hit the road for five straight games on the road in a span of 17 days.
