Plunkett's Five-Goal Performance Leads Utica to Victory Over Elmira

Utica, NY (4/6/14)- The Utica College women's lacrosse team got back on track Sunday as it downed visiting Elmira College 12-7 in Empire 8 Conference action.  Freshman Rebecca Plunkett (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park) led the Pioneers with five goals.
 
Plunkett's five scores were one shy of her career-best of six goals in one game.  She also had a game-high seven ground balls and seven draw controls. She now ranks third in the conference with 27 goals.   Junior Morgan DuPont (Wynantskill, NY/Averill Park) had one goal and three assists, upping her season assist total to a conference-best 26.
 
The Pioneers are now 6-3 overall and 2-2 in the Empire 8 Conference.  Meanwhile, Elmira drops to 4-7 overall, with a 1-3 mark in the E8. 
 
Seven different players scored in the first half, including Vanessa Maines (Boxborough, MA/Acton-Boxborough Regional), Patricia Kane (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville), Megan Kane (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville), Louise Steele-Norton (Avondale, PA/Millbrook School), Colleen Dowling (Fairport, NY/Fairport), Plunkett, and DuPont to give the Pioneers a 7-2 lead at the half.  Elmira scored five second half goals, however Plunkett used four goals in the second half, including three in the final 10:38 to lead Utica to victory. 
 
Patricia Kane (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) finished with two goals and one assist, while Julia Primps (Ossining, NY/Ossining) had two assists, and Megan Lane and Steele-Norton each had one goal and one assist.  Erin Jacobson (Staten Island, NY/Curtis) had five saves, while her counterpart, LeAnna Presler has 12 saves.  Megan Kane (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) picked up six ground balls, while senior Jennifer Rogaski (Schenectady, NY/Colonie Central) had four ground balls and two caused turnovers. 
 
Prior to the game, UC honored its six seniors Rogaski, Primps, Maines, Alexandra Balboni (South Windsor, CT/South Windsor), Lindsey Gelles (Bethel Park, PA/Bethel Park), and Keala King (St. Albans, VT/Bellows Free Academy).  The Pioneers hit the road for their next six games.   Next up, UC will meet cross-town rival, SUNYIT Wednesday at 7 p.m.
