Bled, Slovenia (August 23, 2014) - The Utica College men's hockey team led from start to finish as the Pioneers wrapped up their international trip with a 3-1 victory over host Olimpia Ljubljana.
Easton Powers (South Lyon, MI/Port Huron (NAHL)),
Nick Miglio (San Antonio, TX/Bismarck (NAHL)) and
Peter LaFosse (Merrimack, NH/Kimball Union Academy) each netted a goal for UC as the Pioneers closed out their trip with a 2-2 record.
Powers opened the scoring, assisted by
Justin Hogan (Val Therese, Ontario/Brooks Bandits (AJHL)) and
Joel Wetmore (Horseheads, NY/Lindsay (OJHL)), to give UC an early 1-0 lead. Miglio padded the Pioneer lead with a short-handed goal and LaFosse's empty-netter secured the two goal victory for UC.
Senior goalie
Mike Taffe (Maple Grove, MN/Amarillo (NAHL)) stopped 30 shots in between the pipes for the Pioneers. Utica won the three game series against Olimpia Ljubljana 2-1.
On Friday night the Pioneers lost a hard fought game against Villach Austria, 3-2. UC opened the scoring just over one minute into the game but Villach answered right back with two goals of their own to take a 2-1 lead.
Villach added to their lead in the second period before the Pioneers closed the gap with a goal with nine minutes remaining in the contest. Unfortunately the Pioneers failed to connect with the goalie pulled and dropped the one goal decision.
