Box Score 2 Cortland, NY (8/30/14)- The Utica College volleyball team split on the second day of the Cortland Invitational. UC dropped the first match of the day to Fredonia State 3-0 (11-25, 17-25, 22-25), before bouncing back to get its first win of the season, 3-2 (22-25, 22-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-15). Senior
Briona Enny (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) Was named to the All-Tournament team after her play this weekend.
In the first game, sophomore
Brandi Blaszak (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) had a team-high eight kills, and added two digs and one block, while freshman
Alaina Wickwire (Towanda, PA/Towanda) had five kills.
Laura Homer-Gunther (Sauquoit, NY/Sauquoit),
Alexis Lyon (Prospect, NY/Holland Patent),
Michaline Rubas (Dolgeville, NY/Dolgeville),
Alyssa Nicotera (New York Mills, NY/New York Mills), and
Samantha Hoerning (Farmingville, NY/Sachem East) each had two kills, and
Lora Allen (Dolgeville, NY/Dolgeville) added one of her own.
Allen led the team with 23 assists, while
Chelsea Lauria (Erieville, NY/Cazenovia) had seven and wickwire and Hoerning each added one assists.
Briona Enny (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) led the squad with four digs.
Facing a 2-0 hole headed into the third set, the Pioneers mounted a comeback to defeat Medaille 3-2. Four players tallied kills in the double-digits including Wickwire, Blaszak, Nicotera, and Hoerning. Allen tallied a career-high 40 assists, as well as a team-best nine digs. Enny had eight digs, and
Alexis Lyon (Prospect, NY/Holland Patent) and
Andreana Kroup (Gloversville, NY/Gloversville) also had digs.
The Pioneers return to action next weekend as they travel to the Keuka Tournament. UC will take on Alfred State Saturday at 1 p.m. and host Keuka College at 3 p.m.
